Back from the carb dead

Well, it's a few days after I started binging on carbs and I think I am finally feeling better. I am completely amazed at how significant change was after I stops eating Paleo. The only way I can describe it is it was basically like being sick but without throwing up or fever or sore throat or runny nose. In fact, after my wife did a little low carb experiment to lose some weight before a wedding she was in she felt more or less the same way I did. She actually went to the doctor because of it but neither one of us put it together with the dietary changes until much after the fact.

So my question is this: is it the carbs themselves or is it just simply change? I don't know that I will ever totally understand, but feel that crappy a pretty big motivator to eat better. However, now that I'm more aware of food and its sources and the implications, everything is more complicated. Do I limit myself to on only organic food and the pasture fed raised meat, not only for the health benefits but to vote with my money? How much am I willing to go through to support those industries I believe in and does it mean never eating in a restaurant again?

I don't know the answers to all of these questions but I am excited about signing up for our CSA box this fall - that is one positive step I can make easily.

25 days..... and fatigue afterwards

So I tried the 30 day Paleo challenge. Long story short, it was very hard. I really missed cheese. I got really tired of eggs and meat. I felt OK, I lost a few pounds. Slept well. Generally underwhelming.
This weekend, my wife brought home a leftover pizza on day 25 and I caved. In a big way. I ate the pizza, ice cream and since then all kind of junk.

Since then.... I have been exhausted. Like crazy fatigued, sleeping 2 extra hours at night and drinking coffee at work, which I do not usually do. I don't know if it is coincidence or not. I don't know if it is just the transition...meaning I could keep eating carbs and my energy will return, or not.....

ZZZzzzzz......

One week to go!

I only have a week to go on my 30 day Paleo experiment and boy am I ready for it to be over! Two nights ago Cristina and Nora had some ice cream and I really wanted some but not enough to foil the experiment. Last night I came home late from work to find an entire pizza (half cheese, half supreme) in the refrigerator. That was really tempting not only last night but this morning for breakfast. I feel that I have been very strict with the Paleo diet. No grains no legumes no dairy. No sugar substitutes or processed food. It is possible that even though I ordered as well as I could during the times when I was eating out that I allowed some trace elements into some of the ingredients of the food but it would only be in bits of sauce other are very small portions. I'm pretty close to calling it quits because with the exception of the sleeping better. I don't really feel any different than when I have done previous low carb diets. I have lost a little bit of weight - about 6 pounds - and that's good. It is similar to what has happened in the past. But oh boy would I like to be able to put some cheese on a salad and have some oatmeal in the morning. In fact I am really really getting tired of eggs and almost any form or shape .

Paleo Update

I am about halfway through with my Paleo 30. It is absolutely getting harder. I have avoided dairy and anything that might contain gluten including cereal and bread and beer. I also been careful to avoid any legumes like beans and peas. I've lost about 5 pound which is pretty good. Not mind blowing but good. I've been feeling pretty good but the last few days I've been a little low on energy and don't have anything in particular to attribute it to.

Two interesting wrinkles. I just completed Michael Pollan's book "In Defense of Food" and watched the movie "Food Inc." Both of these have me questioning the moral implications of eating this much meat, realizing that this is probably going to be harder than I originally thought.

Paleo Update

Okay so I am a bit more than one week into my Paleo 30 day experiment. I've found some things to eat outside of the chicken and hard boiled eggs which is what I started with. Cristina made some really great egg cupcakes and they have been a nice convenient breakfast or snack food. The recipe is from the Everyday Paleo cookbook. She also cooked the salmon fillet that I bought at Whole Foods last night and it was delicious!

I have been feeling really great. I have lost a few pounds but nothing to get excited about. I have been doing a really good job of sleeping which is hard for me because I am not a big fan of sleep in general. I have always kind of resented the fact that sleep prevented me from getting more stuff done.

If you are interested in seeing my food/sleep/exercise log, it is here.

Hi!

By day I'm a self-caffeinated, mild-mannered optometrist. By night I'm Twitter-wielding crime fighter with a wife, 2 kids and a fish.

My most interesting current project I am working on is Peripheral Vision - a Facebook page and podcast for optometrists interested in social media. I'm also writing an ebook for the same audience (project currently shelved).

You may be wondering why I don't go for full-on Wordpress blog. Basically, I want to keep this blog fast and easy. If I give myself too many options, I'll want to use them. I like to be able to keep most of this blog directly from my phone.....
