Starting my #Paleo 30 Experiment!

Photo

So today I begin my 30 day Paleo experiment. I've been noodling around with low carb diets for a year now and have been pretty pleased with the results. Thanks to my family, I have read and listened to more information about Paleo nutrition and fitness and I am interested. Especially in the biochemical and biophysiological detail that Robb Wolf goes into.

If you are not familiar with Paleo (paleolithic) eating, the premise goes something like this: we should eat things that our bodies have evolved the to digest and use. As with anything this can be taken to crazy extremes but I'm not too interested in that. What I am going to do is basically stop eating dairy, grains (rice, wheat, corn, and barley) and beans as well as super-manufactured foods and artificial sweeteners and that kinds of stuff. It sounds pretty simple but when you start thinking about it corn and wheat and cheese are in almost everything somehow.

So last night I prepared for my 30 day experiment by going out to eat and ordering meatloaf on Texas toast with sweet potato fries and beer. It is kind of funny how what would have been a typical meal a year ago now seems like a crazy splurge dinner! So off and on over the next 30 days I will keep posting about my thoughts and experiences.

If you are a Paleo person, I'd love to hear any thoughts or comments on your first 100% strict 30 day trial, the good, the bad, and the fantastic!

The Dragon dictation app rocks!

So after my blackberry started having problems. I was really on the fence as to whether or not to get a Droid or get an iPhone. I figured either one I would have been happy with as it would have been a significant improvement but I really struggled with the decision. Ultimately I got the iPhone for two reasons. First, pretty much everything I listen to in the car is via iTunes and I wasn't too excited about carrying my Ipod in addition to my phone or finding a new system to keep track of music and podcasts. Second, my parents have been harping on me because they have iPhones and they wanted to be able to use face time to talk to my kids. So I have an iPhone now and in general I like it a lot. Certainly being able to use all of the foursquare features has been a lot of fun. I tried Angry Birds for the first time but didn't really see what all the fuss was about. But the application that I am absolutely most excited about use the Dragon dictation app. I have used Dragon dictation in the office but it never seemed to be more efficient than typing and using templates. But now that I can dictate on my phone and I can write e-mail and blog posts anywhere. This is totally awesome. And it is free! There are lots of times where I have an idea all are want to send a quick e-mail but I am in the car and really try not to text or e-mail in the car. What is most stunning is how accurate the dictation is and usually can be sent with very very minimal editing. Neat stuff!

Nate Bonilla-Warford, OD's Space

Hi!

By day I'm a self-caffeinated, mild-mannered optometrist. By night I'm Twitter-wielding crime fighter with a wife, 2 kids and a fish.

My most interesting current project I am working on is Peripheral Vision - a Facebook page and podcast for optometrists interested in social media. I'm also writing an ebook for the same audience (project currently shelved).

You may be wondering why I don't go for full-on Wordpress blog. Basically, I want to keep this blog fast and easy. If I give myself too many options, I'll want to use them. I like to be able to keep most of this blog directly from my phone.....
